LO STRORDINARIO TRAMONTO DEL 29 OTTOBRE 2017.
Quando l’amico Marco mi chiama alle tre del pomeriggio di domenica 29 ottobre, per un’uscita fotografica sul Lago di Varese, accetto senza entusiasmo, poiché le previsioni meteo di diversi siti danno cielo totalmente sgombro di nuvole. Andiamo a Calcinate e ci appostiamo in un luogo già frequentato molte altre volte, in attesa del tramonto. Alle 16 il cielo non è per niente sgombro di nuvole, anzi mi pare proprio nelle stesse condizioni del giorno precedente, quando si erano create le condizioni per un eccellente tramonto. Ben presto ci accordiamo che si stanno addensando tra il lago e la catena delle Alpi una quantità di nuvole lenticolari mai vista prima. Verso le 17 incominciamo a fare qualche scatto; alle 17,10 (cinque minuti prima dell’ora del tramonto) le nuvole incominciano a colorarsi di un rosa molto pallido. Dalle 17,20 in poi è un crescendo incredibile di forme e di colori che danno vita al più incredibile tramonto a cui abbia mai assistito nella mia vita di ultrasessantenne. A stento riesco a scattare con qualche raziocinio compositivo e tecnico, tanta è l’emozione per essere interprete di un evento tanto eccezionale, un vero spettacolo della natura. Il telefono squilla, ricevo messaggi da amici che chiedono se sono “sul campo” per fotografare quello che sta accadendo in cielo. Non rispondo, cerco di vivere lo straordinario momento e di riprodurlo al meglio con la macchina fotografica. Alle 16,10, un’ora dopo il tramonto, al buio, le nuvole lenticolari sono ancora incredibilmeente colorate di rosso profondo. Si spegneranno completamente dopo ancora una mezz’ora. Quella sera, lo straordinario tramonto che si è potuto osservare nelle zone dell’alto milanese e del varesotto è stato fotografato da migliaia di telefonini e le immagini sono state pubblicate su giornali e siti internet di informazione. Io e Marco siamo stati forse tra i pochi ad essere “sul campo” con una reflex.
Ho cercato di riassumere in questo portfolio di 10 scatti, la sequenza della formazione delle nuvole lenticolari e della loro progressiva colorazione, così che restino come un aiuto alla mia memoria per ricordare quella straordinaria ora e mezza del 29 ottobre 2017.
THE EXTRAORDINARY SUNSET OF OCTOBER 29, 2017
When my friend Marco calls me three o’clock in the afternoon of October 29th, for a photographic outing on Lake Varese, I accept without enthusiasm, as the weather forecasts of different sites give sky totally cloudless. Let’s go to Calcinate and place ourselves in a place already frequented many other times, waiting for sunset. At 4 pm the sky is not cloudy at all, but it seems to me just in the same condition as the previous day, when the conditions for an excellent sunset were created. Soon we will realize that a lot of lenticular clouds that I have never seen in the past, are forming between the lake and the Alps chain. Towards the 17th we begin to take some shots; at 5.10 pm (five minutes before the sunset) the clouds begin to color with a very pale rose. From 5.20 onwards is an incredible increase of shapes and colors that give birth to the most amazing sunset I have ever seen in my 60s life. With difficulties I try to shoot with some compositional and technical rationale, because the emotion to be an interpreter of such an exceptional event, a true show of nature, is really so strong! The phone rings, I receive messages from friends asking if I am “on the field” to photograph what’s happening in the sky. I do not answer, I try to live the extraordinary moment and reproduce it with the camera. At 6,10 pm, an hour after sunset, in the dark, the lenticular clouds are still extraordinarily colored deep red. They will turn off completely after another half an hour.
That evening, the extraordinary sunset that has been observed in the areas of upper Milan and Varese has been photographed by thousands of mobile phones and images have been published in newspapers and information websites. Me and Marco were perhaps among the few to be “on the pitch” with a reflex.
I tried to summarize in this portfolio of 10 shots, the sequence of the formation of lenticular clouds and their progressive coloring, so that they remain as a help to my memory to remember the extraordinary hour and a half of October 29, 2017.
