IL PASSO DEL SEMPIONE DALL’AUTUNNO ALL’INVERNO. Il Passo del Sempione è un valico alpino che mette in comunicazione la val d’Ossola in Italia con la valle del Rodano in Svizzera. Al culmine raggiunge un’altezza di 2000 metri. Nei mesi invernali può essere chiuso al transito ma nei mesi autunnali e all’inizio della primavera può presentare paesaggi tipicamente invernali o di transizione da una stagione all’altra. Le immagini qui raccolte vogliono proprio rappresentare il passaggio dall’autunno all’inverno pieno. Le prime sono state realizzate a metà novembre: in due uscite fotografiche ho potuto riprendere i colori pieni dell’autunno, le cime imbiancate, i primi fiocchi di neve sui larici dorati ed infine la neve copiosa caduta nella notte tra una seduta fotografica e l’altra. I colori dell’autunno si mescolano alle prime sfumature di bianco della neve. Il secondo gruppo di fotografie (convertite in bianco e nero in postproduzione) sono state realizzate agli inizi di aprile. Per il 10 aprile era prevista neve oltre i 1200 metri. Parto nel primissimo pomeriggio e cerco una località che mi consenta, rapidamente, di salire in quota per fotografare l’ultima nevicata dell’anno. Mi dirigo verso il passo del Sempione, in territorio svizzero. Per tutto il viaggio, mi accompagna una pioggia furiosa che si trasforma in neve ai primi tornanti verso il passo. Il paesaggio, mano a mano che si sale, si copre di una spessa coltre bianca. I boschi assumono una connotazione tipicamente invernale e le baite spuntano qua è là in mezzo alle nuvole basse. Più si sale in quota più le auto diradano e questo mi consente di fermarmi a bordo strada e fare qualche decina di metri nei prati e nei boschi con la neve fino al ginocchio e cogliere l’atmosfera quasi irreale del paesaggio.
SIMPLONPASS FROM AUTUMN TO WINTER. The Simplon Pass is an Alpine pass connecting the Ossola valley in Italy with the Rhone valley in Switzerland. At the summit it reaches a height of 2000 metres. In the winter months it may be closed to transit, but in the autumn and early spring months it can present typical winter or transitional landscapes from one season to the next. The pictures collected here are intended to represent the transition from autumn to full winter. The first ones were taken in mid-November: in two photo sessions I was able to capture the full colours of autumn, the whitewashed peaks, the first snowflakes on the golden larches, and finally the copious snow that fell in the night between photo sessions. The colours of autumn mingle with the first shades of white from the snow. The second group of photographs (converted to black and white in postproduction) were taken in early April. Snow above 1,200 metres was forecast for 10 April. I set off in the very early afternoon and searched for a location that would allow me to quickly ascend in altitude to photograph the last snowfall of the year. I head for the Simplon pass, in Swiss territory. Throughout the journey, a furious rain accompanies me, which turns into snow on the first hairpin bends towards the pass. The landscape gradually becomes covered with a thick white blanket as we climb. The forests take on a typically wintry connotation and huts pop up here and there amidst the low clouds. The higher I climb, the more the cars thin out and this allows me to stop by the side of the road and walk a few dozen metres through knee-deep snow in the meadows and woods and take in the almost unreal atmosphere of the landscape.
